Sirkehane (Ege University Ethnography Museum)

The museum building, which reached today as Sirkehane, was built between late 19th century and eary 20th century. Despite all the inquiries about the owners, no information could be obtained. The back part of the building, which was transferred to the Republic of Turkey Finance Treasury in 1943, was used as a vinegar and pickle production place by the Ege University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Food and Fermentation Technology in the 1960s, and the front part as a lodging. Sirkehane, which passed from the Republic of Turkey Finance Treasury to Ege University by barter in 1990, served as a residence until the 1990s. The building, a large part of which was demolished in the last two decades, was completed on June 22, 2010, and as a result of the renovation, it became operational as the Aegean University Balkans and Anatolian Clothes Museum. An application was made to the Ministry of Culture and it was stated that there was no harm in opening it as a private museum under the supervision of the Ministry, and it was approved on 02.11.2010 and renamed the private 'Ege University Ethnography Museum'. In the wedding house section of the museum, the phenomenon of henna night, dowry exhibition, wedding dinner preparations and dowry writing in the traditional wedding practices of the 19th century are animated in a traditional Izmir house environment. In order to ensure the sustainability of traditional professions, woodworking, shoemaking, copper processing and tailoring professions are revived in the museum.
