The history

The building, which was built in 1922 as the Evangelical Girls 'School belonging to the Greeks, was also known as the' Central Girls 'School' or 'Kendrikon Parthenagogion' at that time. After the proclamation of the Republic, the building, which was used as İzmir Girls' High School since 1924-25 academic year, was given to the Fair Committee by the Cultural Directorate to be used as a hostel on the fair days after the said school was moved to the former Male Teacher School building in Karataş at the beginning of the 1937-38 academic year. However, after a short time, it was decided to use the building as a branch of Izmir Erkek Lisesi for middle school students. In February 1939, it was transformed into a new high school named İzmir Second Boys High School. In May 1942, the name of the First Boys' High School was changed to 'Atatürk High School', while this school was called 'İnönü High School'. On March 14, 1955, a new conference hall was opened in the school, where the bust of İsmet İnönü was placed on 16 March 1943 and its name was transformed into 'Namık Kemal High School' in September 1952. In September 1965, the secondary school department was removed and the existing students transferred to the Barbaros Secondary School built in the school garden.
