Karagöz is the main actor of our shadow play tradition. The shadow play is fictionalized with quarrels and dialogues between Karagöz and Hacivat that contain comic elements. Game; It is played by moving the figures called 'depictions' on the white screen with light reflected from the back. Karagöz and Hacivat forming the game; The custom-made technique of characters and objects includes traditional knowledge and experience.


The history

Karagöz depictions are made of semi-transparent tanned leather, which can be calf, cattle or buffalo leather. Using stencils, characters are cut from leather. Pastel colors are mostly used. After the painting process, sticks are added and made ready for the game.
Karagöz is registered in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2009).
