Sheikh Bedreddin Shrine And Burial Grounds

You are at the shrine where the tombs of Sheikh Bedreddin and his brother Sheikh Semsettin are located. Halit Ziya Usakligil describes them in 'Two Faces' chapter in his 'Tales of Izmir'.

This building was used as Egyptian Lodge until 1925. Founder of the lodge was Sheikh Mustafa Istefevi Effendi of Egriboz; he was buried in burial ground of the lodge. Sheikh seat of the lodge passed to Sheik Sevketullah Effendi, and upon his death in 1890, to his son Sheikh Bedreddin. It is not known how long Sheikh Bedreddin maintained this position. Halit Ziya doesn't mention a date in his story where he tells the sad deaths of these two brothers.

After 1925, this building survived with the help of craftsmen in the neighbourhood, and was used for Friday prayers. During recent restoration works conducted by General Directorate of Foundations, burial ground was removed from the yard. It is claimed that the two sarcophagi inside the shrine belong to Sheikh Bedreddin and Sheikh Semseddin brothers.
