Yeni Sadık Bey Hotel (Uşakızade Mansion)
This is the Uşakizade Mansion where Atatürk's wife Latife Hanım was born and lived until the age of 11-12.
The history
The building belonging to the Uşakizade family was built in the second half of the 19th century. The childhood of our famous novelist Halit Ziya Uşakligil also passed here. After the family moved to their mansion in Göztepe, the mansion was also used as a post office building for a short time. In 1913, under the management of Elmaszade Emin Bey, the building started to serve under the name of Uşakizade Sadık Bey Hotel. Within the 40-room hotel, there was a coffee house and a restaurant called Sefa.
There are two hotels named after Uşakizade Sadık Bey in Basmane in the Izmir guide dated 1926. Büyük Sadık Bey Hotel, run by Ali Saim and Ahmet Müfit Beyler, has 14 rooms and 40 beds, and the accommodation fee is between 50 and 75 kurus. In Küçük Sadık Bey Hotel, run by Abdi Efendi, the accommodation fee is 50 kurus. The hotel was divided into two for a period and operated by different people.
In the Izmir guide dated 1934, only one Sadık Bey Hotel with 23 rooms is mentioned. During this period, the cost of accommodation in a single-bed room was 75 kurus and a double-bed room was 65 kurus. Managed by Ömer Lütfü Bey, the hotel was later enlarged and increased to 44 rooms and 80 beds.
Located at the entrance of Hotels Street, this mansion faces Basmane on one side and Hotels Street on the other. While the section facing Basmane is three-storey and modern in style, the two-storey section facing the Hotels Street preserves its historical character. On the upper floor of the two-storey building, the overhangs supported by embroidered iron consoles on both sides of the entrance add movement to the structure. Under the roof canopy, there are dental motifs decorated in plaster.
This historical building is unfortunately left to its fate today, only the shops on the ground floor are working.
