Alsancak Historical Train Station

Located at the beginning of the Izmir-Aydin Railway, the foundation of which was laid by Izmir Governor Mustafa Pasha in 1857, Alsancak Station was put into service in 1858. The line has been used extensively since 1866. The station was closed on May 1, 2006, within the scope of the construction of IZBAN project, and was put into service again on May 19, 2010 after the completion of the project. Late Ottoman architectural influences are observed in the construction of the Alsancak Station. In this period, there are structures where Empiric, Baroque, Rococo and Classical Ottoman styles are used together. The interior is quite high and the window openings are decorated with vitrals. Another feature is that the part where the train tracks of the station is supported by a cage system is in a very high form. The cradle belt was used to separate the space inside and to mark the boundaries of the openings outside. Door and window details are decorated. Cradle arch system was used in dividing the train tracks. There is a tower added to the south façade of the building. The clock placed in a niche on the side of the tower facing the station square is estimated to have been attached to the building in 1890. This is in effect the first clock tower of Izmir. As Alsancak Station is no longer used in national rail services, two platforms and the passangers hall are utilized to host various events.
