İzmir Atatürk High School

İzmir Atatürk High School started its education in 1888 as a 5-year administrative school in the building where the İzmir Courthouse is located next to the Konak District Governorship (this building was demolished by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to construct the district governorship building in 1977), with 120 students. The first principal is Abdurrahman Bey, who is also a history and geography teacher. In 1890, it was governed for 7 years. He became a sultan (high school) from October 29, 1910 to the Republic period, during the time of Emrullah Efendi's Ministry of Education.

The history

Although education was suspended during the occupation of Izmir by the Greeks, it provided education and training services to the youth of Izmir as Mekteb-i Sultani until the Republic Period. During this period, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, Ahmet Haşim, Mahmut Esat, Selim Sırrı, Mustafa Rahmi, Ahmet Adnan Saygun, former prime ministers Şükrü Saraçoğlu and many other valuable personalities served as teachers. Along with the Republic Period, the name of the sultans became a high school at the end of the 1922-1923 academic year. It was named Izmir Boys High School, Izmir First Boys High School, and finally Izmir Ataturk High School in 1942, respectively. The first principal of the high school in the Republic Period is Rıdvan Nafiz Bey, one of the graduates of the school. The President, whose name is Gazi Mustafa Kemal, taught mathematics at Izmir Boys' High School on February 1, during his visit to Izmir in 1931. The school, which was a Foreign Language High School in the academic year 1993-94, became an Anatolian High School in the academic year of 1997-1998. With the permission of the Ministry of Education, the phrase Anatolia is not used due to its historical values. Building History: The building was turned into a courthouse by the Greeks during the Greek occupation and later used as a courthouse by the government after the Turkish army cleared Izmir from the Greeks. Today's building was built by the Greeks as a daytime girls school. When the building passed from Greeks to Turks, it was a 3-storey building. It had no external plaster and garden. The surroundings were in the ruins of fire. Former Prime Ministers Şükrü Saraçoğlu and Şemsettin Günaltay studied at İzmir Atatürk High School. Vasıf Çınar, the 5th Minister of National Education of Turkey, completed his high school education in the school that was called İzmir İdadisi at that time. Mustafa Necati Uğural, who was the Minister of National Education between 1925-1929, and Reşit Galip, who held the same post between 1932-1933, also studied at this school. Metin Bostancıoğlu, who served as the Minister of National Education in the 56th and 57th governments, is one of those who studied at the school for a while. Former Minister of National Defense Ilhami Sancar, Minister of Interior Hilmi Uran, Minister of Finance Sümer Oral, Justice Minister Mahmut Esat Bozkurt, and Halil Menteşe, who served as the President of the Parliament of the Ottoman Parliament, are among the famous people who studied at the school. Kazım Orbay and Memduh Tağmaç, writer Necati Cumalı, poet Attila İlhan, famous heart surgeon Siyami Ersek, musicologist and state artist Ahmet Adnan Saygun, writer Samim Kocagöz and Turkish Football Federation President Mahmut Özgener are among the names who were educated at this school.
