Gaffarzade Hotel
You are standing in front of Gaffarzade Hotel, scene of a very important incident in near history.
Hotel was operated by manager Molaliczade Abdi Bey. In the early days the hotel had 28 rooms and 35 bed capacity, but later number of rooms were decreased to fifteen. In the 1930s, price for a single bed room was 100 kurus (piastre), and a double bed room price was 75 kurus per person. This facility was one of the fancy hotels of the day, while Gaffarzade Coffee House in ground floor of the hotel was one of the renowned coffee shops of the city as well.
The bend in front of Gaffarzade Hotel was the spot chosen for the assassination attempt on Ataturk in 1926. Ziya Hursit, a Member of the First Parliament and of the assassins, has stayed here the night before. After a denounce on 17 June, his hotel room was raided. Following trials, on the night from 13th to 14th July, assassins were hanged: some in Hukumet Square and in front of Yellow Barracks, Ziya Hursit, Laz Ismail, Gurcu Yusuf, and Copur Hilmi at the corner of this hotel, where they would attempt the assassination.
Authentic structure of Gaffarzade Hotel is damaged because of commercial arrangements inside. Yard was covered with a roof and converted to indoor space, and some parts of the ground floor area were removed to create a large store. If you take a peek upstairs, you can see closed rooms of the hotel, and the original façade from 853 street direction.
