Rabbinate Old Community Building
You are at the heart of Jewish neighbourhood, a street once known as Chief Rabbi Street. This Rabbinate building you're looking at has a large yard surrounded with high walls, and was built in 1840 with the support of Rothschild family from Vienna.
All official business of Jewish Community was handled here. Until the 1930s, central library and religious school of Izmir Jewish Community was also here.
In order to meet the needs of the community, a bakery next to this Rabbinate would produce dough free food for Passover holiday. Just across this Rabbinate was a hospital for Jewish community, built in 1837. This hospital was named after Rothschild family to honour their support to the community; after serving until 1911, this hospital was closed.
Evacuated in 1997 and a derelict structure today, Rabbinate building is scheduled for repairment works by Konak Municipality.
