Karataş Hospital

The first hospital belonging to the Izmir Jewish Community was established in a cortejo in 1827 to combat epidemic diseases and was developed in 1837 with the addition of the building opposite the Rabbinate. Named after the family in 1874 due to the contributions of the Rothschild family, this hospital had to be closed in 1911 as a result of the dispute between the Rothschild family and the hospital administration.

The history

Nesim Levi, one of the Jewish citizens of the city, donated his house to be used as a hospital in 1913. Then, a large hospital with a garden was created with the purchase and construction of the adjacent lands.

The hospital was licensed in 1914 at the will of Sultan Reşad. The hospital used by the government during World War I was given back to the congregation at the end of the war. In addition to Jews, Muslims and Armenians were also served in the hospital. Until 1923, he worked under the name of Karataş Hospital Charity Institution. The building, which was granted the status of an association by accepting to be included in the scope of Turkish citizenship after the Republic, served under the name of Karataş Jewish Hospital until 1950. After this date, the hospital came to the fore with its delivery service and gained fame in Izmir. A new building was built in front of the historical building with money from the will of the Italian Madam Yolande Fercken between 1986-1988. After this date, it was named Private Karataş Hospital.

The historical building, which is located on a steep slope, reflects the characteristic features of Karataş buildings on its facades and interiors. In the middle of the façade arrangement consisting of five equal parts, the entrance is through a wrought iron door with a barrel arch. Just above the entrance, the part that protrudes slightly from the facade is terminated with a triangular pediment. A small balcony with iron railings was built in front of this exit, carried by wooden buttresses. The rest of the façade has low arched windows.
