Cats of Izmir
The hospitable, tolerant and modern people of İzmir live in peace and harmony with all the creatures of the city. Especially with the cats!
Compared with many Western countries, Turkey is an extraordinary place where stray animals roam freely and live side by side with people. In every corner of the country, apart from the countless animals that are cared for at home, dogs and cats can survive on the streets in a very healthy way.
İzmir is one of the most modern and well-educated cities in Turkey. Therefore its residents show the animals they deserve. As such, the streets of İzmir are full of cats that wander around freely or trying to use all their cuteness to make people pet them.
You can come across the cats of İzmir everywhere: While sitting on the grass in Alsancak, walking on Kordonboyu, walking on Cyprus Martyrs’ Street, or even on the seats of a public bus driven by a conscientious driver in the winter.
İzmir takes good care of its cats
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality is one of the most sensitive municipalities regarding stray animals in Turkey. If something happens to our little friends, the Stray Animals Emergency Response Team in Kültürpark comes into play immediately.
Stray animals, the first intervention of which is carried out in the clinic in Kültürpark, are sterilized and marked after their treatment is completed; rabies and internal parasite vaccines are also given.
Besides, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has two large shelters spread over 113 acres of land in Seyrek and Gökdere. The municipality keeps more than 1,300 animals under protection in these shelters.
High-energy food is distributed for stray animals, which might have difficulties in finding food in winter.
Don’t forget the ‘Bigger Cats’
In addition to the cute little cats that you can see in every street in İzmir, you can also visit the bigger ones, namely lions, tigers, lynxes, and cougars in the Natural Life Life Park in Çiğli.
The park, which is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, also has a cafeteria and gift shop.
