Universities of Izmir
Izmir, one of the most modern and educated cities in Turkey, has 10 universities.
1. Dokuz Eylül University
Founded in 1982, Dokuz Eylül University educates brilliant minds for the fields such as health, economy, arts, and engineering. As of today, the faculties within the university are as follows: Buca Faculty of Education, Maritime Faculty, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Reha Midilli Foça Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Sport Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Dokuz Eylül University also includes four colleges and 10 institutes, including the State Conservatory.
2. Ege University
Dating back to 1955, Ege University is the fourth university in Turkey, and one of the most esteemed ones. Today, the university serves with 17 Faculties, 9 Institutes, 4 Colleges, 1 State Turkish Music Conservatory, 10 Vocational Schools, 6 Departments Affiliated to the Rectorate, and 37 Application and Research Centers.
The university, whose campus is in Bornova, has Atatürk Cultural Center in Konak, Agricultural Application and Research Center in Menemen, Observatory in Kurudağ, aquaculture facilities, Faculty of Engineering, pilot facilities for chemistry, textile, food and bioengineering departments in Urla and Tuzla, and facilities of vocational schools in Ödemiş, Bayındır, Tire, Aliağa, and Bergama.
3. İzmir Bakırçay University
Established in 2016, İzmir Bakırçay University is one of the youngest educational institutions of the city. Established as a state university, İzmir Bakırçay University has 5 Faculties (Science and Literature, Law, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, and Health Sciences Faculties), 3 Colleges (Vocational, Justice, and Foreign Languages colleges), and 3 Institutes (Science, Social Sciences, and Health Sciences).
4. İzmir Kavram Vocational School
İzmir Kavram Vocational School is a foundation-owned higher education institution established in 2008. The institution, which started education in the 2008-2009 academic year, has been operating in Izmir since the 2018-2019 academic year. The goal of the school is to fill the void in the field of vocational training in Turkey, meet the need for skilled technicians, and also to provide a transition to higher education.
5. İzmir Democracy University
Izmir Democracy University, founded in 2016 consists of Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Science, Institute of Health Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences, School of Foreign Languages, Health Services Vocational School, and the Vocational School.
6. İzmir University of Economics
İzmir University of Economics, which has been operating in the field of education since 2001, has 5 Faculties, 2 Colleges, 1 Vocational School, 2 Institutes, 8 Application and Research Centers. A total of 464 academics, 59 of whom are foreign nationals, work at Izmir University of Economics which has almost 10 thousand students. Izmir University of Economics offers 28 associate degree programs, 35 undergraduate programs, 30 masters programs, and 6 Ph.D. programs. Izmir University of Economics, which has ERASMUS program agreements with 55 universities abroad and academic cooperation protocols with 23 universities, is an institution that has been awarded the "Diploma Supplement Label", which is accepted by the European Commission as a measure of the quality of education at universities.
7. İzmir Katip Çelebi University
The university, named after the 17th-century Ottoman scientist Kâtip Çelebi, was founded in 2010. İzmir Katip Çelebi University accepts students in the following faculties: Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Shipbuilding and Maritime, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Islamic Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Art and Design, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Tourism.
8. İzmir Tınaztepe University
Established in 2018 to provide education in the field of health sciences, İzmir Tınaztepe University consists of two faculties (Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Health Sciences) and a vocational school (Health Services Vocational School). The university is to accept students for the 2020-2021 academic year for the first time.
9. İzmir High Technology Institute
İzmir High Technology Institute is a state university established in Izmir in 1992, which conducts high-level research, education, production, publication, and consultancy especially in the fields of technology. The institute, whose language of education is 100% English in all departments, also has equipped laboratory facilities for many disciplines.
10. Yaşar University
Yaşar University, which started education in the 2002-2003 academic year, consists of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Art and Design, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Architecture. It also includes the Institute of Science, the Institute of Social Sciences, the Vocational School, the School of Justice, and the School of Foreign Languages.
