Izmir Museum And Gallery Of Painting And Sculpture

You are at Izmir Museum and Gallery of Painting and Sculpture, which has livened up the art scene in the city from the first day of establishment.

It was first opened as a gallery in Kulturpark on 9 September 1952, and later it was moved to its new place on Ataturk Boulevard. With this new gallery, artists of the city finally had a place to exhibit their works. Government Exhibitions were organized every year, gathering local art-lovers at this gallery.

1973 was a turning point for Izmir Gallery of Painting and Sculpture. Thanks to persistent efforts by Turgut Pura, manager of the gallery at the time, it was converted to a museum and moved to its current building. Turgut Pura made unmatched contributions to acquiring the rich painting and sculpture collection of the museum today.

Izmir Museum and Gallery of Painting and Sculpture is a lively institution with a specialized library, two galleries, and art workshops. Its collection is getting richer by the day; masterpieces by artists from Ottoman Reform Era on including paintings, unique press techniques, sculptures, and ceramics are on display for visitors. Collection and exhibits reflect a variety of periods and trends from masters of old generations to contemporary artists; art pieces are preserved with exquisite efforts in restoration workshops to persist through time.

Library within museum premises includes a large number of books on art and art history, providing a rich source for researchers and students alike. Museum organizes courses for painting, sculpture, Turkish decorative arts, along with conferences on plastic arts, and other art-related activities.

we visited this building after looking for (then finding and paying for) parking for an hour. When we finally walked over the museum door had a sign saying theyre closed. They've ecidently been closed since the big earthquake in Izmir due to structural safety concerns regarding the building, but the fact that they're closed until further notice is disappointing. It was frustrating that this information was not on or not clearly on their webpage. We look forward to visiting it when it reopens.
