A Day Full of History

There are many historical buildings that deserve to be seen in the center of İzmir.

Church of Saint Vukolos

Church of Saint Vukolos

The Church of Saint Vukolos, also known as Agia Vukla Church, because it’s located in Aya Vukla neighborhood in Basmane, serves as a cultural center today.

It was built as an Orthodox Greek Church in 1886 and opened for worship. The building was abandoned when the congregation left the city after the great fire. The building, which served as the İzmir Archeology Museum in 1943, was also used as the storehouse of the İzmir State Opera and Ballet Directorate for a while after the İzmir Archeology Museum was relocated to Kültürpark.

The Church of Saint Vukolos, which is also known as Gözlü Kilise (the church with an eye) now hosts cultural and art activities as a cultural center. There is the İzmir Press Museum in the outbuilding section of the church where you explore the history of the Turkish press.
