Saint Helen Catholic Church

Saint Helen Catholic Church

The Saint Helen Catholic Church in Karşıyaka, formerly known as Cordelia, is the first Catholic church in the district. The church, which was built on the land given to the Catholic community of Don Alfonso Vallery in the late 19th century and whose construction was completed in 1904, is located on 1728 Street, also known as The Church Street.

Designed by the architect Raymond Pere, who also designed the famous arch of Konak Clock Tower and St. Polycarp Church, Saint Helen attracts attention with its splendid appearance created with skillful workmanship. In order to get more light in, the central part of the church was built higher. In the church are the statues of St. Joseph, St. Polycarpe, St. François, St. Antoine, St. Helen, and St. Constantine, and the panels of scenes depicting the life of Jesus Christ. Here you can also see the inscription dedicated to Van der Zee, one of the Dutch Levantine families of Karşıyaka.

The church was restored in 1968 without ruining its historical texture. It continues to hold ceremonies, weddings, baptisms, and funerals.
