Located in Kemeraltı, Portuguese Synagogue is the only synagogue in İzmir which is named after the country of origin of its immigrant founders.
Founded by Portuguese immigrants, as the name suggests, this synagogue is one of the six synagogues known to exist in 1640 during the reign of Rabbi Yosef Eskapa and stands out as the largest synagogue of that period.
The synagogue burned in 1976 and was completely ruined except the outside wall until recently. It was renovated by Izmir Jewish Association and Aegean Young Businessmen Association and reopened its doors as a Social and Cultural Activities Center in 2018.
